[Sentoa] exhaust systems

Jerry,

Our 1988 NT does not have a muffler. It does have an exhaust hose rise
that is very close but not touching the ceiling of the aft cockpit
floor. There is no loop. The hose rise is sufficient

to prevent back flow of water in getting into the exhaust manifold. That
is, if the flapper valve on the exhaust pipe is in good condition and
the engine running. When the engine is not running, be sure the stern is
not facing a strong currant. This situation would be at anchor or dock
side tie. Even then the flapper would resist any major amount of water
from back tracking. I have had no problem even running in reverse.

Yes there will be a higher noise when not moving but when traveling
there is just a little more noise over a vessel that has a muffler
system, but to me it's music. Back pressure will be reduced yet not
enough to realize fuel savings. Hope this helps.

Folks,
--
Our boat tech. announced that the muffler on Water Horse is deteriorated
and leaking.
The exhaust off the engine has the sea water injection elbow, rubber
hose, fiberglass pipe,
hose, muffler, hose, and flapper valve out the stern.
When i suggested we just eliminate the muffler, go straight shot, he
warned of seawater
being pushed up into the engine from following seas. The muffler is not
a check valve, so
i figure if we put a loop siphon in the hold, it will be as safe as
anything.
Do you agree?
Is there any noise consequence?
Will the Cummins engine run better or worse with less back pressure?
Will it affect fuel efficiency?
