Jeff,

I have separate antennas and both work great. They are identical looking,
about 8' tall, and mount on the regular ss fold down mounts up on the
hardtop. I have never had a splitter but have heard lots of bad things about
them, especially on the VHF side.

I have a Clarion AM/FM on my tug. Antenna input is from dealer
installed, 12V powered, UFO AM/FM/TV antenna with integral splitter/
power supply. (I hooked it up, the dealer's installer didn't even
connect the power to the device.) But it doesn't bring in some local
AM stations.
Boater's World has been dropping prices so I finally sprung for a
Shakespeare 4357-S splitter to pluck the AM&FM bands from the VHF
Antenna and abandoned the UFO AM/FM system. I hooked up the AM/FM
branch from the new splitter to the Clarion while I installed the VHF
connector to go to the VHF radio. Got fair (not good) AM reception
while doing so. First time ever.
As soon as I connected the VHF branch to the VHF radio, the AM signal
died. Disconnect the VHF, AM signal returns. Emailed Shakespeare. They
seemed to be helpful until I told them the antenna was a Comrod, not
theirs. Then it was "not their problem." Not really a quote, but close
enough.
Has anyone had any experience with this, or is it necessary to have
separate antennas for each device?
