But here's the question. I was told I should take my boat from moorage in Puget Sound (salt water) to Lake Washington (fresh water) once a year at least for a few days. The slime and bad stuff that grows/thrives in salt water will be killed by the fresh water.
Is this true, and if so, how long does the boat need to be in fresh water.
I take my tug thru the locks and into Lakes Union & Washington at least once a year, usually for "opening day" (first weekend in May) and perhaps later in the Summer or early Fall. We're only in the fresh water for 3-5 days, so the salt water critters/slime die, but it's not enough time to acquire any fresh water critters/slime. The worst part is that it's hard to sleep the first night in fresh water, as one has to listen to the salt water critters cry and sob as they die......terrible noises so bring ear plugs.
It's also good for the engine and genset to run some fresh water thru the systems. Besides that, the lakes are fun. One advantage of being a member of a yacht club is the reciprocal moorage agreements (free moorage and sometimes minimal electricity charge) with clubs inside the locks.....Seattle YC, Queen City YC, Meydenbauer Bay YC, Tyee YC, Rainier YC, Puget Sound YC, to name a few.

Just kidding about the critter noises.....J
