It seems that if you leave a sounder set to auto gain / auto depth
they can act a bit odd at times. In Prince William Sound there are
commonly depths greater than a thousand feet and my Northstar sounder
will turn the gain up so high trying to find the bottom that it will
start showing depths of maybe 20 feet. I believe that is is seeing
krill or silt or bubbles in the water. You might try using manual
gain and depth range and see if that helps. As far as turbulence,
that can be a problem with the transducer, but only in the sense that
a hull fitting or strake ahead of the transducer might allow air
entraned water to pass over the transducer. If this is not a new
installation, and it worked fine in the past then I doubt that is your
problem. Good luck.
