It seems that if you leave a sounder set to auto gain / auto depth  
they can act a bit odd at times.  In Prince William Sound there are  
commonly depths greater than a thousand feet and my Northstar sounder  
will turn the gain up so high trying to find the bottom that it will  
start showing depths of maybe 20 feet.  I believe that is is seeing  
krill or silt or bubbles in the water.  You might try using manual  
gain and depth range and see if that helps.  As far as turbulence,  
that can be a problem with the transducer, but only in the sense that  
a hull fitting or strake ahead of the transducer might allow air  
entraned water to pass over the transducer.  If this is not a new  
installation, and it worked fine in the past then I doubt that is your  
problem.  Good luck.
