[Sentoa] Anchor

On our former 32, we also had a raised platform that supported the Ideal
windlass. The block was a distinct block of fiberglass that was mounted
to the deck, with a hole that penetrated the block and the deck for the
hawse pipe and cables. I know this very specifically because we had a
significant leak problem (that we didn't know about) over the years
which culminated in a massive leak that caused us to have to fully
rebuild the forward underdeck on the boat which had rotted out.
Moral of the story is to do an excellent job in bedding the block before
mounting the windlass... (I also ditto the washdown suggestion,
although we just took the existing wash down on the back deck and
extended the hose to work up forward).

I have an Ideal windlass mounted on a teak block to raised the base.
I use the windlass several times in a year. After 20 years of service
the motor failed. I pull out the 20 year old manual and called the
number....I got Ideal.....over the past 20 years they had the same
number and were still helping customers.
Per their instructions I shipped the windlass to them. They gave me an
estimate to refurbish it. They gave me options such as rechrome and
other things to make it look new.
I selected all options and got back what looked like and operates as new
windlass. I was very impressed with the service, attitude and support.

I have a Lewmar on my 1990 and also being in the Great Lakes do no use
it much. I only have covered buttons located on the deck that I
usually engage with my foot. My windlass is placed on an elevated
platform. If you would like a picture of how it is mounted let me know.
The idea of a hose to wash off the chain and the anchor is a great
one. I slowly raise it and let the wave action clean it, but we have a
relatively clean bottom mainly of sand. With mud I doubt this tactic
will work.
The Lewmar is powerful and works smoothly. I hope in the next few
years to use it more often!
