[Sentoa] Sentoa Digest, Vol 68, Issue 1

If I'm not mistaken, ABYC specifications call for crimped connections, not soldered connections; the reason being that should there be excess current flow generating excess heat, the solder may melt. The only exception, I believe, is with main battery leads that must be crimped but may be soldered AFTER proper crimping. I can't give the exact ABYC spec, but will look for it when next I'm at the club (we are members of ABYC, and have copies of the entire specifications).

  Hello All,

      Generally you shouldn't solder after you crimp. A solder joint is not as vibration resistant as a crimp (it tends to crack), and it will not handle as much current as a crimp (most of the electricity actually runs along the outside of the wire, not thru it and a soldered joint will heat up with current thru it quicker than a crimp does). A good crimp made with a proper crimping tool should not pull apart unless it is the wrong size connector end for the wire. As far as corrosion goes, that is why you put good heat shrink tubing over the wire end of the connector and up well onto the insulation of the wire. The above is how the military does it for high current applications and is also considered good commercial practice. Hope this helps.

    Mark;

    Great primer, I couldn't agree more, I also soldier after I crimp. The terminal does not look as good but the connection is better and the soldier closes all air gaps the could corrode.
