[Sentoa] Nordic Tugs Service Level

Fellow Tuggers,
I've resisted the urge to comment on Frank Johns' excellent posting but have decided we all need to be heard from in this difficult time. Having friends who own other brands of boats and/or motorhomes, who use their "Owners' Club" meetings to critique manufacturers' quality and service issues (complain) while enjoying the manufacturers' food and drink, I think we need to remind ourselves of the tremendous quality product and after market support we receive from Nordic Tugs, even now when they are being sorely tested. I've purchased very few products in my lifetime, make that none which have performed so well and reliably. With over 1600hrs on the main and over 12,000nm under the keel, in the rare event of needing Nordic Tug's, Inc.'s assistance I've never received less than total support and back-up. Anyone who visited the factory will attest, you were always made to feel welcome. Any service tech who visits the boat remarks on the quality and manufacturer's attention to ease of service. We can't send them a check but we can say, "Thank you!" to a group of dedicated people. "We wish you the best. Can we do anything to help?"

I would like to tell a short story I find reassuring in view of the changes that have been announced at the factory and concerns we have all heard about.
On servicing a seeping rudder post seal on 32-227, we found that we needed a whole new rudder assembly. Worse, the dimensions of the assembly had changed with changes to the 32 hull since 2003 so we needed an obsolete assembly rather than a current part. A combination of Randy Barnes, Keith Hultz, and others, exhumed the old drawing, engaged the fabricator to make the assembly over a weekend, and crated and shipped it to San Diego for about the standard cost of the current part in one week! It fit perfectly on arrival and certainly shortened my lay-up time in the yard versus the alternative of a custom local fabrication.
This from a company that is working a skeleton staff on short hours four days per week is the kind of extra effort we have often seen from the people at Nordic Tug. I am happy to report that, even in today's situation, the spirit to do what it takes to solve customers' problems is still there.

Bryan,I have a brick red hull as well and after buffing, polishing & even wet sanding over the years I have now given up on it.
With all of that work it will look great for about a month than that milky look returns, the previous owner even applyed a product called Poly Coat that will give only a?temporary delay for the inevitable (paint). So, I have now began the process for painting which is quite hard when following the paint manufactures directions but, should last seven to ten years. If you are now removing the rub rail it might be a good time to consider painting?& removing that rail isn't easy if you don't want to break it, there is calking there and breaking the seal is tough.Good luck.

Thanks, Al. ?I'll spend some time investigating. ?A quick check of the nearby areas showed a lot of possible entry areas. ?This one might take a while to chase down...especially because the only way to find out if it's stopped is to bash into waves off the starboard bow and see if it recurs. ?I'm thinking we won't encounter those conditions for a while.
In the meantime, I have to restore the brick red color to the stern, before I apply the new name and hailing port decals; then I have to mount the Sea Wise dinghy davit system; then I have to deal with dividing the anchor locker and make provisions for a second anchor and rode. ?Those should keep me busy enough.

Richard,
Thanks. Just returned home from an afternoon of working on Sarayu?s hull,
without a lot of success. The immediate problem is the considerable
difference in hull color underneath the old name (I removed the old vinyl
name and hailing port yesterday.) and the surrounding hull. I tried a
couple of different polishes and waxes that claimed to repair sun damage
without significant success. Tomorrow, I?ll try rubbing compound. Not
looking forward to it. If anyone has better ideas, I?d love to hear them.
I?ll live with the inevitable sun fading for a while. For now, I just want
the new name to look like it belongs there, not covering up the remnants of
the old name. A paint job is well into the future. As for the rub rail, I
won?t be attempting that removal until and if I actually track the leak to
that source.

Try Flitz on the fiberglass, it takes some elbow grease but it is
amazing stuff.
