[Sentoa] Line Cutters in Maine

We¹ve cruised Maine every year since 1968. I had a Spurs cutter installed
last year, our first year with Odyssey, and I had one for many years on our
previous boat, a Tartan Offshore Cruising Ketch. A cutter is a necessity in
those waters, where lobstermen plant their pots with no regard for traffic.
(e.g. The narrow, curved rockbound passages between Blue Hill Bay and
Jericho Bay, known as the York Narrows and Casco Passage, are chock full of
them).
It is possible to avoid pots 99.44% of the time, but a wrap that stalls the
engine in those waters can quickly lead to disaster.
I¹ve found the spurs cutter much more effective than the
single-wheel-on-shaft types. The latter failed on my previous boat when I
encountered a slightly sunken piece of netting, about a bushel basket full.
A tow and a diver were required in that incident.
