>From Manasquan to Cape May harbor, running outside, is 85 nautical miles. Certainly, if the weather is right, and one is up for a 12 hour run, it can be done in one day. Glimmer Glass offers a good anchorage at Manasquan.

When we did this trip, having overnighted at Flushing Bay Marina next to LaGuardia, coming through Hell's Gate at first light and slack tide, we ran down to Manasquan Inlet, then inside to Tom's River. Stayed overnight at Tom's River tied to the town dock. Great eats just a couple of blocks up the hill from the dock.

Because the ocean was going to be too rough for us, we planned it this way, and went inside to Atlantic City, overnighting there. The following day, we made a pleasant run outside to Cape May.

Next day, from Cape May we ran up the Delaware Bay, through the C&D canal, then down the Chesapeake a ways to the Bohemia River. The Deleware Bay can blow up and be awful when wind is opposing the tide, but we ran it on a quiet day and had a great ride. Timing is everything.

A note about the boat: On this trip I was moving a Great Harbor 37, which draws less than 3 feet. The New Jersey ICW is tricky in spots, and boats drawing over 4 feet will endure some suspense in there. Close attention must be paid to tides and currents.

My wife and I will be cruising the Chesapeake Bay this summer. Our home port is Essex, Ct. and we're wondering if anyone has any recommendations regarding cruising from Long Island Sound to Cape May, NJ: 1. Is the run from NYC to Cape May a relatively easy one-day trip or must we plan on overnighting midway? 2. We're planning on going by way of the outside passage rather than the inland waterway. Does anyone have any advice here? 3. We've heard the trip up and down the Delaware River is lousy - does anyone have any recommendations re: this trip?

  Thanks. Brian.
