Folks,
On Iron Horse, NT26-114, with the 4cyl. turbo, 66hp Yanmar:
The OEM tach always worked poorly, looking at the pointer was
only a good guess at your actual RPM, not to mention the
occasional erratic episodes.
--
Found an OEM sending unit mounted on the bell housing,
bought an Etna digital Tach. They set it to match the Yanmar
sending unit. Worked great, produced exact RPM readings
sensitive to one RPM. Just read the numbers.

On Water Horse, NT32-031, with 6cyl, turbo, 220hp Cummins:
The OEM tach worked pretty good, but still a good guess
looking at the pointer.
--
No OEM sending unit, just a plastic plug in the hole where it
should be on the bell housing. RPM was signalled from the
alternator. Etna talked me through the conversion, bought a
new sending unit, and digital tach, ran all new wiring between
them. Same great results as with the Yanmar.

Sent from a mooring in Deep Bay NY, on Lake Champlain.
beautiful fall colors, but a cool. A bit of gunk hole in
Mallets bay today, then in for winter lay up. (sniff sniff)
