Hi

When I got my Red 32 a 3 years ago (how time flies) I knew it had been
painted but I didn't know how or with what. There where places on the fwd
section above the rub rail where it had peeled revealing the very faded
gelcoat. I presumed improper prep (perhaps dew) prior to painting.

Being a cconsummate DIYer I knew I could make it look better but couldn't
find a good match in a spray bomb. I was beginning to believe it was a
clear coat that was peeling. I then read somewhere that that is a method
of "fixing" faded gelcoat and said what the hell and went to a auto supply
store and got a spray can of clear coat. I wet sanded the peeled places
and gave it to her with the clear coat spray bomb. I couldn't believe the
job I had done and the color is a perfect match. I would bet next weeks
pay cheque you can't find it.

I had a previous boat Awlgripped 25 years ago and it is a great paint but
scratches easily (showing the color underneath) and is hard to fix a small
area.

If you plan on painting anyway, give the clear coat a try on an area.

Many years ago a dockmate painted a 27 foot sailboat with lacquer spray
bombs, I can't remember how many, but many. It didn't look like Awlgrip
but looked a heck of a lot better than the faded gelcoat and it lasted
many years.
