[Sentoa] Northwest tuggers with painted hulls

Ardyth and Dave,

On the east coast, most of the Nordic Tuggers who paint their hulls
use Awlgrip. I repainted my previous Nordic Tug, 37-049 flag blue
hull, last fall with Awlgrip and was very satisfied. When I got
estimates, the cost ranged from $200 to $300/foot (LOA). The yard
that did our painting removed the lower rub rail completely and the
rubber puddings on the bow and reinstalled them after the paint job.
If they were changing the hull color from the original gelcoat, they
would have also removed the top rub rail. They repainted the inset
to match the topsides. The result was clean, crisp lines and the tug
looked brand new.

I was advised by several knowledgeable people not to use Awlcraft.
There is clearly a debate over this and you can Google lots of
opinions. Awlgrip and Awlcraft are two completely different types of
paint from the same manufacturer, but Awlcraft is a little less
expensive and easier to apply. Awlgrip has a harder finish, never
needs polishing, and has a glossier finish without a clear coat.
Some yards prefer to use Awlcraft because it is a more forgiving
paint, allowing them to do the spraying outside and then sanding and
touching up problems.

A few words of advice: The yard doing the work needs to be
experienced using Awlgrip and needs to have a dust free spray booth
large enough to completely accommodate your boat. Ask to see samples
of their work or get references. And make sure your estimate is for
the paint you want.
