[Sentoa] Cold Weather

David, 'sounds like over-kill and a chance of fire to me. Many boat fires are caused by leaving electric heaters on constantly. I find that a sheilded heat lamp on a timer is good, and those devices called "Golden Rods" are also helpful....they just get warm, not hot. Incidentally, I remember Shilshole Marina freezing over about 10 years ago. One last thought, the first thing to freeze are your boat's windsheild washing tubes...drain 'em.

The good news for us in the PNW is that the water doesn't go much below 48 degrees, and with the boat in the water, it's a help. I do know that at Skyline, if you are close to shore, there can be some ice buildup on the water from the fresh water that flows from shore. If that is where you are moored, I would be careful to watch for ice buildup around the hull.

I do the following on the interior:

  1. Engine block heater turned on. This keeps the engine room (and by leaving the hatch open, the pilothouse) reasonably warm.

  2. Dry Air Heater in head.

  3. Dry Air Heater forward.

  4. Dry Air Heater in galley.

  5. King factory installed heater turned up a bit.

  6. Water off, faucets drained.

  7. Check frequently and often during cold snaps.

  Hope that helps.

I just bought a 32 Nordic (Omega) and have embarked on a huge learing curve. We are about to have a winter "blast" of cold weather. Can someone please tell me what I should be doing to prepare for cold weather. Thanks.
