Hi to all,

Wehave an odor which I believe is originating from the waste pump. It is pretty much isolated to the tank compartment, however when I run the starboard air conditioning unit the smell is drawn up to the saloon through the air conditioner.
Has anyone else had this problem if so have you found a remedy?

  Doug.

Is that 4.56 nautical mpg or statute mpg?

  Thanks,

Tom, If you don't mind let me weigh in on this one, as well.

Leslie and I completed the Great Loop (www.leslieanddoug.blogspot.com) in Happy Clamz (32-127) with the 220 hp. It was a trip of 7726 miles, mostly at less than 8 kts (1300-1400 RPM), and 4.56 miles per gallon. What a wonderful trip.

On the entire trip I never felt that I needed more horsepower. As a matter of fact, I spent a lot of time wondering the cost benefit of removing the turbo and returning the motor to a naturally aspirated unit. Now before all of you gear heads jump on me, I worked for Cummins Corporate in Columbus, Indiana for 8 years, and worked directly with the B, C, M11 and the N14 (all on highway but the marine unit is basically an on highway unit that is marinized.)

If you do go with the 270, you are still dealing with the B series, great engine btw. As far as speed goes, you won't increase the speed that much, but you will sure increase fuel consumption. Many people claim that they want the extra horsepower to out run a storm. My philosophy has always been, never put yourself in the spot where you must out run a storm. Even with high HP you still are going to be in the 15-16 kt range, not really a fast, out run the storm boat....

Lastly if you want a fast boat, buy a boat with high hp and a planing hull. If you want a super, comfortable, seaworthy boat that will get you through "Thick 'N Thin" buy a NT, you'll love it. What I'm basically saying, is don't buy horsepower, you don't really need it.

We're getting closer to putting an offer in on a used NT32 but have one question for the group. Knowing what you all know, what would you say are the advantages / disadvantages between the two subject Cummins engines? Is the 270hp the better way to go based on economy, reserve power and strength? or is the 220hp in your opinion the better engine based on economy, history and ease of maintenance. Also, what fuel burn can we expect at a 8-10kt cruise speed with each engine.
Hopefully when this is all said and done, I'm going to be a long time regular contributor with first hand knowledge of 32' Nordics.
    All the best and thanks.
