We have a 1984 26 tug powered by the original 85 HP Perkins. Although the engine only has 1300 original hours, it has been a "bullet". Has never had any leaks, reliable all the time, gives us about 8 to 8.5 knots cruising speed 2300RPM with about a gallon an hour fuel consumption. (11/2" shaft with an 18" , four blade screw)
I have found parts to be very expensive, but to date other than an oil cooler & raw water pump, everything is original
You might want to look at this site for some more options in marine engines tadiesels.com/parts.html
If I had to re-power I would probably look at the Yanmar because I believe they are lighter. I know the Perkins is a heavy engine.
I will be curious and hope you post which engine you choose and how the re-powering goes, because some day I too will have to do. We are using the boat a lot more now and the hours are adding up, which is a good thing!
Good Luck,

Subject: [Sentoa] 26' Repower
Hello all,
I know there is a lot of info in the archives, of which I am digging through, but I thought I'd ask a few questions anyhow. I am in the process of narrowing down options for repowering a NT26. I am interested in 50 to 75 hp. 100hp may be nice, but I can't imagine using it, even in the treacherous passes here in BC. I imagine it would throw a heck of a wake. I am used to cruising at 5.5 - 6.5 knots, but it might be nice to be able to do 8-9 knots if needed on occasion.
I currently have a 45hp BMW 3 cylinder diesel with ~5,000 hrs on it. Let's just say it's near death and leave out the grim details. It powers through a 1.25" SS shaft and a 18RH11 prop with a Hurth 1.88:1 transmission. The boat also has Morse cables connected to a brass Kobelt head which I would like to keep (it goes so well with the brass Brown Bros & Co ships wheel). I have a semi custom interior as it is an owner finished boat, so your boat details (on engine hatches, pilothouse doors and cabinetry, engine mounts) may or may not apply. I am interested in seat of the pants or empirical data.
I know many of you have Yanmars. What are the pros and cons? They seem like a high rpm engine to me.
Anyone out there have a Beta or a Sole?
Does anyone have a trolling valve on the transmission? I think many hours of low rpm (low temp) trolling for salmon may have been the demise of this engine.
What kind of boat speed does 75hp get?
Kind Regards
Mike Pedersen
