Thanks, Frank.  How long is your base loaded whip by itself?  I think  
I probably have plenty of height using my cargo mast.  I have two 8  
foot long Shakepeares (connected to two ICOM radios) up there now and  
I don't like the way they look.

You're right about overall height;  I'm a former sailor myself.  I  
figure I don't need to talk to China, however!

I use a base-loaded whip on a 12 ft mast with good results (not as  
good as
on my old sailboat with its 60 ft mast, though). I briefly had an 8  
ft whip
on the wheelhouse top and was not satisfied. I think you will find that
height is everything in placement of a VHF antenna.
