I'm not sure what you mean by "working against its wave."

In order to cover distance, we normally cruise the TomCat 24 at 20 to  
25 mph with the two Yamaha 100s humming at about 4,200 rpm. Fuel burn  
is about 10 gallons per hour, loaded for cruising. If conditions  
permit, our TomCat will easily run up to 35 mph burning about 15 gph.

When sightseeing, the boat seems to like 15 mph or so. At trawler  
speeds, below 10 mph, it putts along just fine.
