[PCW] Manta 44 plus Endeavour Trawlercat 48)

Thanks Bill, I agree with your general comments regarding boat tests/reviews
in magazines.

I subscribe to 3 (printed) boat mags and read others on-line.

I understand that some US mags are accused of catering to their advertisers
rather than their readers offering fairly bland descriptions rather than
objective critiques.

One review I read just a few days ago as a result of a comment on this list
was (IMHO) worthless. I could have written it by just paraphrasing the
brochure.

British boat tests are generally just that. Tests.
The chances of a healthy blow resulting in challenging seas are probably
better than Florida (hurricane season excepted) but the testers offer
constructive, critical comment when necessary, balanced by praise for
features when appropriate.
The ergonomics of the helm/instruments/controls are commented on and any
shortcomings in visibility, safe movement during passage or where style has
dominated over function etc etc will be covered.

The fuel consumption figures for the Endeavour cat are at odds with the
manufacturers data.

http://www.yanmarmarine.com/products/pdf/LYA_CX/6LY2A_TechData.pdf

The Yanmar 440hp engines burn about 23gph each at WOT - the review claims
8gph - an obvious misprint but even at 3000rpm the review claims 13.5gph
where Yanmar data states circa 17gph. Something doesn't add up here!

Bill Jacob's article does not make it clear whether his data refers to each
engine or total consumption. Misleading!

The fuel data for the Manta looks to be accurate for a total consumption.

I love Passagemaker Magazine for its in-depth approach to subjects that are
often covered in a few inadequate paragraphs elsewhere. Keep it up, Bill
(Parlatore).

Regards
