Scott, Some folks treat the ICW like I-95, get it over with. Presently, you are in a very regulated/expensive place which slowly becomes less so as you toddle north. No Name Harbor on Biscayne is a great stop after the keys and Bahia Honda near Largo--both state parks--Visiting Boot Key will be an experience of why, Flordia is so regulated-as would Coconut Grove. The Moorings at Las Olas in Ft. Laurderdale are great for boat watching especially on Sundays--and the Yacht clubs in Daytona and New Smyrna are friendly. Vero beach/velcro beach is nice--just 4 miles north ia Jones Fruit dock--$10 nite any size boat and Dick Jones is at 90 a real piece of old Flordia-!
Point being that you will eventually get the the Chesepeak Bay with 3600 miles of shoreline
,which gets hot and jellyfish full by August--thats when you think of Maine-passing thru Long Island harbors like Oyster Bay will remind you of the crowded/expensive conditions you presently face -and the lobster traps of Maine will drive you nuts.
Take your time now-50 mile days-use high tides for skinny waters, Head north after the Bay in August-spend 2-3 months on the Bay-Visit DC/Annapolis/Baltimore/go up the James River. Tides Inn is the best Boating resort on the East Coast--lots of great stuff.
