Tim - When I was an active delivery captain, I did a
lot of work with PAE/Nordhavn. I like and respect
their boats, but especially the people. And I've
worked with Robert at Alcom at few times (quite the
character).
That being said, I personally would be wary about
having commissioning done by a 3rd party - even if
it's an extremely good one (I don't know the yard you
mentioned). There will be a lot of odds and ends to
repair, many items that won't work, many connections
that fail. My guess is you'll have a lot of money into
the electronics, and the tab will be running with the
yard (even though PAE will be footing the bill). Your
boat will take multiple sea trials to get everything
straight - and make sure everything is WORKING AS
DESIGNED before taking off. WxFax receives properly,
computer interfaces are working properly, all TV
monitors are correct, all screens are properly
configured, all GPSs read on all displays and
repeaters, all the sensors read out as designed (wind,
speed, depth, etc - sometimes these do not interface
into nav software) etc.
That being said, my experience with PAE was they were
good for their word - they'll fly repair people all
over as needed. But it's still a hassle to arrange.
It's better to get it as straight as possible right up
front.
And the trip north is no more than 8-days. Nothing, in
the big scheme of things.
And Scott B made an excellent point on tax - having
the work done in California buys you more time.
Just my opinion - but I would strongly recommend
having the yacht commissioned in Dana Point.
Best success Tim -
Peter
