Hi Ron -
October of 2005, as I recall. My inexperience at fault. The inlet looked
okay from a distance, but when we got inside I wandered too far south of the
north jetty. A couple of big rollers overtopped the north jetty and hit us on
the beam as they broke. Seahorse was thrown sideways so hard that the dink,
which was strapped down in 2 places, slid off the stern platform, dangling from
one end like a pendulum. A sobering experience.
Since, we have learned that there have been lots of mishaps there, many
involving local commercial fishing boats. In fact, a scalloper was being salvaged
from the bar just north of the Light on the 15th of this month when we went
in. We used to approach directly from the sea buoy, but now do as the locals
do and round the end of the north jetty, about 30-50 yards off, in order to
avoid the outer bar.
Barnegat is Dutch for "Inlet of Breakers" and is one of the most dangerous
inlets on the East Coast. We'd prefer to miss it, but unfortunately at our
speed, it's difficult to reach Absecon in daylight from Atlantic Highlands at
this time of year.
Regards,
John

breakers in the Barnegat Inlet.
