I know that Nordhavn owners spend that much, but isn't there
something wrong with that picture. Ben Gray went around the world
and through the NW passage in a boat that had the following (directly
from the Yachtworld listing):
* Pactor 3 modem for SSB Sailmail
* Icom 802 SSB
* Icom 402 VHF
* Garmin 76 and Garmin 172 GPS
* JRC 24 mile radar
* Desktop nav computer (2005)
I think that "package" is worth less than 10K, or an order of
magnitude less than your "starting" estimate. (I admit there is not
an autopilot on that list, so throw in another 6K for a good one).
Lots of expense equal lots of complexity which equals lots of
breakdowns. Your "simple" cruisers like Ben may have more time for
cruising and need less time to spend fixing the inevitable breakdowns
of their systems.
