Just a clarification. The sailmaker predicted 3
to 4 knots in winds of 20 knots plus. When we tried the boat under sail only,
the wind was 8 to 10 knots at most. When we tried motorsailing (which we did
quite a bit of), we increased our speed by 1/2 knot with winds of 10 knots on
the quarter. This was about a 15% increase in performance.
I still believe
that the sail scenario is a viable alternative as a "get someplace" system on
some boats - not all. I have to believe that because it is my only
alternative!
