It looks as the big fat trawlers producers start to get concerned about fuel
consumption, well it is about time! As much as I would like to have the
space luxury of a Nordhavn or Selen trawler, it makes no sense for us to
have a boat if we can't afford to pay for the tankersize-load of fuel. This
is why we started the construction of a passagemaker-lite (Tad Roberts
design) which will give us a 8000 mile range with 3400 liters (900 US
gallons). The idea of a motorsailor is certainly not bad but the reason we
just sold our aluminum yacht is that we have spend a fortune on sail and
rigging. Look at the price of building a motor sailor and the additional
cost of not only buying but maintaining the rigging and sail wardrobe. With
our passagemaker we will use that money the buy the necessary fuel to go
around the world.
We are building our boat here in South Africa where it is still affordable
to build a one-off but hopefully more people will get interested in the idea
of going far with a fraction of the fuel used by the trawlers. Our website :
