Yes, that's reasonable enough, and we think weather routing is an excellent
idea, especially for predicting departures, although we're skeptical when it
comes to forecasts over a few days into the future.

We haven't used a professional since 1997, when we made passage from
Morehead City to the BVI. At that time, we used the services of a fellow named Bob
Rice, who I believe has since retired to do wx for ocean racers exclusively.
We were in Salt Ponds VA installing our new AP and when our planned date
arrived Bob advised us to wait a few more days as something was brewing. We made
good use of the extra time to finalize our preps while West Marine's 1500
fleet departed that same day and ran into the remains of Hurricane Mitch. Two of
the boats in the fleet were abandoned and many were damaged.

The PO and builder of our Westsail 43, who made many single-handed passages
from Florida to the VI, told us to "forget weather windows and just go, as
you'll get bad wx somewhere along the way anyway." Although there is some truth
to that, we have tried to be reasonable in picking out departure time to at
least have a few good days. We checked in with Herb on that first passage and
sent him $100. after we arrived. Well worth it 10 years ago and I'd say
it's still a good deal. Whereas Seahorse is no more capable than a cruising
sailboat of outrunning what Dave (of Swan Song) aptly calls "bowling balls," we
can at least go in the right direction to avoid the worst, although there are
exceptions, like H Lenny.

Regards,

John
