A gps compass would be very handy if you were going to the north 
pole.  Otherwise, it is very expensive and I have not heard very 
positive reports on the list.  If you are willing to wait for them 
finally to ship a NMEA version, the sci-tex eloran will give you 
astounding heading accuracy for only about one boat unit.
