GL: Compass calculations - a little long

Larry,  We were cruising off New Jersey in the Atlantic Ocean when my  
chartplotter suddenly went black!   Such a disorientating experience  was like s
teering manually with my eyes closed for a few seconds.    Not an experience 
I want to repeat.   
Anyway, we returned to port and called a mechanic.  By the time he  
arrived, wouldn't you know it, everything was working fine.
