John, can you recommend a GPS that your method would work with?  Every GPS
that I have needs more motion than four people twisting a boat to give a
good directional reading.  Mine are Garmin 3200s.

Coral,

The easiest way to create a compass deviation chart for your boat is to use
a good GPS and put your boat in a shallow bay where you can swing it in a
circle with one or two persons at the bow and one or two persons at the
stern.  Have someone watch the compass every 5 degrees and mark the GPS
heading.  Do it a couple of times for accuracy.
