I also agree with Dick and Carol and I actually am located on Seneca Lake with
my boat. I very seldom leave the Finger Lakes, although you can only get to
Cayuga and Seneca by boat, the rest of the Finger Lakes are worth the effort
to spend some time doing day trips with a rented car. But, even if you just
stay on the water that is available by boat, there is plenty to see and do. If
you plan it right, you can see a race at Watkins Glen, you can spend time in
the San Francisco of the Finger Lakes in Ithaca and eat at the Moosewood Inn
or any number of other great restaurants in the area. There are many wineries
of course with several having docks, some with overnight capabilities. There
are not many protected anchorages on either lake but then they are only 32
miles long so it is not difficult to get to one end or the other where there
are lots of marinas or tie ups in the canals.
On the canal itself, planning to participate in as many canal fests as you can
will keep you busy for most of the summer. That along with the Corn Hill
Festival in Rochester itself. There are many historical sites along the way
and some of the most beautiful waterfalls and gorges anywhere in the US. You
can also extend the cruising season well in to the end of September or even
October to see wonderful fall colors and more festivals, wine releases and
tours. If you are able, there are so many kayaking places in some of the
smaller rivers and streams and great fishing. There is also some impressive
windsurfing opportunities if you are into that.
I know I am probably prejudice as this is my home territory. I have lived on
the Chesapeake, Long Island Sound, Alaska and Oregon and there are unique
qualities about each one. I don't think any of them are more diverse or
provide the boating public with more opportunities for varied activities, than
the Finger Lakes, the canals and the Great and Almost Great Lakes (for those
of you on Champlain).
Take care and enjoy your time.
