HI, Georges,
We did the Rideau in 2005, great side-trip. Our goal was Ottawa for Canada
Day, July 1, and it was a good choice. Tie up on the wall in front of
Parliament and enjoy the parades, parties and fireworks. Took us about two
weeks fro a round trip from Kingston as we did not want to deal with the St.
Lawrence locks.
A good link is:

Plenty of free info and charts.
Virtually all of the locks are parklike and perfect for overnight, although
hydro (electric) is rare. There are some nice towns, notably Smith Falls,
Merrickville. The history and quaintness factor are awesome. We met many
English and French speaking locals who spend their entire summer on the
canal, moving a lock or so every few days.
