Mike, unless I'm mistaken, what I believe you have described is the process
for updating the microcode (firmware) that controls your Garmin devices.
You have not updated the chart data on your Garmin chartplotter.  Garmin
charges a fee for the chart data.  Some is available online for download,
but most must be ordered from Garmin.  The firmware that runs the devices
(think of that as the operating system on your computer, equivalent to
Windows on a PC or OS X on a Mac) is free,
