To be honest, there are very few safe and convenient anchorages in
New York City. On the other hand, New York is served by some of the
best local transportation in the nation. If you want to visit Gotham
and explore the shopping and fleshpots during a boating visit to New
York, I advise you to anchor well outside the city and take public
transportation to the midtown area. Two favorites of mine for free
anchoring are Great Kills harbor in Staten Island and Croton Point in
the Haverstraw Bay area of the Hudson River. Both are about an hour
away from midtown by very convenient public transportation. If you
need marina services, both Great Kills and the lower Hudson area have
a number of marinas that offer transient berths. It is much easier to
get to the city if you stay on the east shore of the Hudson since the
direct commuter rail service runs up that side.
