GL: New York city anchorages

Hello Randy et al,
We stayed there twice last year. This basin is part of the New Jersey
Liberty State Park. There is a very upscale golf course and club house
being finished for the 2009? Open. The golf course has a very nice ferry
dock ramp (strictly private so unless in danger don't use it) Near the
basin end(golf course end) there is a public boat ramp and rickety floating
pier which is used to temporarily tie up trailer able boats when launching
or retrieving. It is not suitable for a trawler. Holding can be an issue.
While we were there several sailboats dragged or could not get a set. We
had to find good holding in the black goo after several attempts. I swear I
brought up part of "Jimmy Hoffa". The anchorage is small so scope becomes an
issue when in the deep part (18') in light of the questioable holding and
swing area(rock concrete wall on one side, hard shoal with rock breakwater
on the other. We have used a delta 55 and a Fortress with all chain rode to
get a set. The neighborhood is questionable so I was advised by the local
NJ Park police Sgt. who had his night patrols watch out for me when I was at
anchor, nice guy but I don't know what they could have done if something
happened except call harbor patrol. Ellis Island is an Island and is not
within walking distant. It must be visited by contract ferry service NO
private boats or dinghies permitted. There are a couple of basins along
side the park wall where we saw a large sailboat tied up...I think it may
have been a teaching boat connected to the park system but don't know. The
park closes at night so I don't know if that wall dockage is an available
option.

large basin with a charted 8'-17' of water.

-"...I believe that the ramp in question is part of Liberty State Park..."
-"...I would think that Ellis Island is within walking distance..."
