All of this is assuming that the drive belt is snug.
The answer to your question is an ammeter...inductive would be nice...but
Rather than purchase a high dollar instrument (although not a bad idea to
have around). This is also assuming that you are close to somewhere to
purchase something.
A thought or three, .and a couple of questions..
Does your instrument panel presently have an ammeter ?
One can be obtained at almost any auto parts store, or even Harbor
Freight. Get one with enough coverage to include your new alternators theoretic
output. BTW most alternators when hot put out about 10 % less than the
rating. If done this way see asterisk.
OR
If so you could disconnect it and remove...take the two wires and bolt
together and tape over. please note which is the positive lead.
******
Now go to your alternator output stud and remove that wire...that is now
the new negative lead for your ammeter and use the stud from the alternator
to positive.
If you do have some output, which you indicate, then I would say that the
alternators sense and or field wire are hooked up incorrectly. The sense
wire tells the regulator how much to kick in.
Good Luck, Carl Hibbard.
