The best instrument is a clamp on DC ammeter. I have one made by Provo that I bought at WM some years ago. I believe Ancor makes one as well. Froogle DC clamp on ammeters and see what comes up. I suspect Defender sells them as well. They will cost at least $150.

Another instrument is an E-Meter that will tell you +/-amps, amphours, etc. These will cost at least $200 plus installation. If you are in to cruising on the hook for more than a day or two at a time, you need one to monitor your DC usage.

And Blue Sea makes a 0-150 amp panel mounted meter with shunt for less than $100.
