GL: Erie Canal closed

Just caught up on my email since last nite, and found a string of 
"transalert" emails from the Canal Corp, that the Erie Canal is closed 
"until further notice" in the area of palmyra, western Erie Canal ... and 
also closed between locks 8 and 9 due to "police activity."

I have a coupla dozen emails here from folks wanting to know what's up .. 
rather than reply to each, I'll find out what's going on and post the 
results here.

Just got a phone call, it appears a small airplane crashed into the canal 
near Rotterdam Junction lock 8 & 9.  Info is sketchy but it appears 3 
killed and 1 missing from a little one-engine plane.  This info came via 
the canal grapevine and is not official info.

No clue on the western erie closure, I'll post once I find out ... i have 
several folks working the phones to find out.
