Kevin,
I am based on Seneca Lake in Geneva. I agree with Bill, most people who
charter use one of the canal boats. They will take you anywhere on the Finger
Lakes and the canals. Can not take them out into Lake Ontario but you could
spend several weeks just doing the Finger Lakes and the Canals so you don't
really have to go anywhere else. Also, there are a lot of free dockage on the
canals if you don't want to do marinas every night. If you tie up at Fairport,
Spencerport, Lyons, Seneca Falls or Pittsford, there are lots of restaurants
right there by the canal. There are also restaurants with docks at several
places both on Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Also at least three wineries with
docks that you can stop and have a wine tasting. There are many festivals at
different villages along the canal that are fun to stop and see. You can go up
the Genesee to Rochester and see the Corn Hill Festival if you timing is
right. There is free dockage with water and electric there too and at least
three restaurants right on the water where you tie up. Of course, both Watkins
Glen on Seneca and Ithaca on Cayuga have gorges and restaurants and car racing
and Cornell, you could spend a day in each of these lovely villages (well,
Ithaca is not really a village but we like to call it the San Francisco of the
East). We also like to anchor out in Cross Lake and fish for dinner and spend
the night on the hook. So many things to do, so little time. Hope you get to
do this and enjoy the wonders of our Finger Lakes region.

Kevin:
We chartered a "canal boat" from Erie Canal Cruise Lines. They offer
one week or three day cruises out of Seneca Falls, NY (right between
Seneca and Cayuga Lakes). There are several other outfits that rent
bareboats. See them here:

We had a blast. If it is very windy on the lakes, especially from
the south or north, the ride could be thrilling!
Plan to take a full week. Lots to see and do.
