GL: CO DETECTORS/ALARMS

Ken,
My current boat has several 12 vdc Fireboy/Xintex CO detectors
installed but in my last boat I installed Nighthawk home/household
CO detectors I bought at Home Depot or Lowes. I like the model
that is powered by AA batteries because it doesn't require any
wiring and it has an LCD display of parts per million CO. And
they're much less expensive than the marine units.
Marine CO detectors are designed to be less sensitive than home
units to prevent too many false alarms.....I guess because gasoline
powered boats normally have higher levels of CO than homes. If
your boat is diesel this shouldn't be a problem. Even if you have
gas engines (like my last boat) I think the Nighthawk units are
a good choice. They might not last as long in a salt water
environment but CO detectors should be replaced after several
years anyway. The sensors deteriorate with age.
