Single engine is always better than twins when running in shoal waters, for
the purposes of underwater protection. You WILL make a mistake or two sooner
or later ! Or, you may not even make a mistake but be the victim of a
loggerhead or other underwater object striking the prop/rudder/strut.
I found that 40 ft trawler single engine appeared to be a wise choice for
the Loop. It afforded ample space, living conditions, yet remained single
engine for simplicity, underwater protection, and lower operational and
maintenance costs. Once the boat is over 40ft you will usually find twin
engines.
