Several weeks back there was a flurry of posts regarding Delaware Bay
crossing techniques and cautions. We read them with interest as we were
going to be making our first crossing in the near future.
Glad to report it was uneventful on July 3rd. Methinks there were several
factors. We took the advice of most with experience and timed our travel to
go with the wind and with the tide. We departed Tollchester Marina in MD
about 800a. and entered the C&D canal about 1100a. Encountered absolutely no
commercial traffic in the canal, most likely because of the Holiday weekend.
Exited the Canal and into the Bay about 1230p. Although we had 20+kts of
wind, it was mostly out of the W-SW and in line with the outgoing tide. It
was a very pleasant and uneventful ride. Arrived at the mouth of the Cape
May Canal about 430p.
Piece of cake. I know under other circumstances it can be an 'event' but
lesson learned. Listen to those with experience.
