GL: Tankless Water Heater

We have a tankless model that runs on propane. I have mixed feelings on it.

Negative: I don't like leaving the pilot light running while the boat is
closed up, so we have to light it before use. Also, it doesn't have a
dedicated vent. It sits under a hatch and for safety we open the hatch before
use.

Positive: As long as you have propane and water, you have unlimited hot
water.

We use it ocasionally for showers. For dishes we typically run a pot of water
thru the coffee maker (utilizing the generator or shore power).

West marine has a similar electric version (120volt), but some friends steered
us away. The heating coil will burn out if the tank runs dry (which will
happen sooner or later).

What heats your water while you're anchor? Are you going to run the
generator? Will it do a good enough job using 12VDC to heat? And as Fred
states, nothing nicer than having plenty of hot water after a short
cruise.
