Sterling,
Of course much depends on the reasons for the stern anchor.
From time to time we use one.
In narrow waterways if we must anchor to the side I set the bow anchor
and let out a lot of rode and drop the stern anchor, set it by hand. It
is a 16 lb Danforth that works great on the 45 CHB. Then take up slack
on the bow anchor. Reverse the process to leave.
On occasion I use it as a lunch hook to anchor with the stern to the
breeze,
The anchor is mounted vertically on the swim step against the transom.
Half inch nylon line with abt 6 ft of chain. Easily handled by hand. The
rode goes over the rail and into a deck fitting into a plastic milk
crate inside the lazarette. The bitter end is firmly tied to a joist in
the lazarette.
If you are not able to retrieve it by hand, take a turn on a cleat and
back the boat to break it loose and then haul in. I can recall having
done this only a time or two.
This has worked great for over 20 yrs.
