I wish to thank all the thoughtful members of the forum who took the time to
provide me with much appreciated advice on choosing a route to bring my new
boat home from Detroit, MI to Jamestown, RI.
After reading the postings and e-mails and looking again at the routes, I am
leaning toward the quickest and simplest route via Lake Erie and the full
length of the Erie Canal, even though I will forego great cruising in
Georgian Bay, the Trent Severn and optionally the Rideau Waterway and Lake
Champlain. The length of time required for the Georgian Bay/Trent Severn
route - a month or more - is just too ambitious for our first cruise on the
boat. However, if we enjoy canal cruising I will give serious thought to a
mini-loop next summer via the Erie Canal, Oswego, Rideau Waterway, Ottowa
River and Lake Champlain. The great loop trip in full is still on the
horizon, but we'll have to see if the new boat is well-suited to a voyage of
that length and magnitude.
