In the original email, I told him it was a composting toilet, the brand and a
brief description of how it works. I never mentioned portable toilets. He
brought that up on his own. I take that to mean at least some on the water
officers will treat it as a portable toilet.
Someone mentioned checking with a different agency. The problem with that is
cruisers wind up playing russian roulette. If you get an agency that
recognizes the benefits of a composting toilet you are fine. If you get pulled
over by an agency or even an individual officer who doesn't(god forbid you get
an officer mad at you), the cruiser will get hammered. I don't want to play
that game.
I hate to miss some good cruising grounds on the Trent-Severn, but the Eire
Canal route looks pretty nice also. If it avoids potential legal problems
(made worse by being in a forgein county. yes canada is still a forgein
county), its worth it.
My big problem with this issue is I spent $1000 and a day of my life tearing
out the old system and upgrading to a system I thought the tree huggers would
like and now I find out the tree huggers don't even know what they want. When
you look at the science, it is a non-issue to dump overboard in open water.

Mike, did you directly ask whoever replied to you if composting toilets
were allowed? From reading his response all he did was reiterate that
portable toilets were not allowed. There was nothing mentioned about
composting toilets.
