Paul Starzynski, of the Swan Point Marina and Boatyard in Sneads Ferry, NC,
has alerted us that a barge has taken out a critical aid to navigation just
west of where the New River Inlet meets the ICW.
Quick flashing red "2," located at approximately Mile 246.5, marks the turn at
the critical Raisin Rock area. Depths outside the channel are charted at 1
foot.
Cruisers should keep an eye on the depth sounder when transiting the area, as
many vessels go aground here each year. The Coast Guard is aware of the
situation and is working on the problem.
We will continue to keep an eye on the situation and post updates as they are
available.
