Got this from my good friend Paul Mosetti, a professional sign maker in
southern New Jersey who mostly does boat names in either vinyl or paint.
Thought you might all appreciate some thoughts from someone experienced in
this specific area.
Read below.

Send this along to your friends. After 30+ years in the boat lettering
business both painting and vinyl ,I have seen to many cases of gelcote
damage from using oven cleaner to remove names. It just is not worth the
risk. Use a professional grade paint remover designed for fiberglass, Petit
or Interlux have them. Other ways work , like the acetone and the
scotchbrite pad and compound, but be careful there are no poor patches in
the area for they will stain with the color of the paint and very hard to
repair. Also take care that the area in question has not been painted over.
As for wearing the gloves ,it is a good idea to keep your hands from
getting
stained and dried out, is for the cancer if it causes it I'll get it. I'm
off to do another boat name know. Take care, MOE
