GL: Electronic Navigation

Brian,

Coastal Explorer is pretty much the gold standard now. Unlike versions 5, 7,
and 8 of Nobeltec, it does not crash unless you really try to help it. (I have
one crewmember who can crash anything and even he has had a hard time) CE has
always rendered vector charts better than Nobeltec (until
Boeing/Jeppeson/Nobeltec decided their fix for a very poor job was to remove
support for NOAA ENC charts entirely - good job guys) Now in addition ,you
have to pay extra to get raster support - who had the brain f__t to make that
an optional feature?. With this kind of mentality, no wonder the Dreamliner
still doesn't fly! Of course as you mentioned, they also want you to pay an
outrageous fee for their charts that they received from the government for
free. (Reminds me of the Accuweather debacle)

You can see more at: http://rosepointnav.com/CoastalExplorer/default.htm

Unfortunately, they do not have a demo for the current version online yet.
However the downloadable demo (V1.1) will give you a good taste of what CE is
all about. The 2009 version is just better. No it is not perfect and there
are some things in Nobeltec I like better, but not very many any more.

Has anyone had experience with The Captain software or any other you can
recommend?

I've had it with Nobeltec. They are no longer supporting the program VNS I
bought only a couple of years ago and want you to upgrade to their newest
version for $130 or more. Why do I need a new program---the rocks and rivers
haven't moved? T

They have about doubled the price of their charts from $250 to $399. (It
takes
4 sets of charts to get from Florida to New York). The charts are created by
the government and paid for by taxpayer dollars---not Nobeltec. Now if find
out their latest chart set (#39) had a serious flaw in it and failed to show
some of the significant navigation data like depths and bridges in certain
areas.
