GL: CB RADIOS

Well, just have to weigh in on this discussion. We perhaps err on the side of
going a little too far with safety but always figure that our boat and more
importantly our lives are worth it! We have 2 radios on the bridge and 2 at
the lower helm. One of the reasons for this is so one can be on automatic fog
horn when necessary and we still have a radio for communication. We also have a
handheld for the dinghy and one for the life raft. We have carried an EPIRB
for many years-at one point in our 200 boat marina, ours was the only one.
Even if you are not far off shore, it can mean the difference between being
found in time and not found at all. We had a commercial fishing boat sink just
6 miles off shore and it took 18 months to find them because they didn't have
an EPIRB. We also carry 2 survival suits, a sea anchor large enough for our
boat, and a 6 passenger life raft in addition to our dinghy. We've taken most
of the power squadron courses, including
Advanced Piloting and carry electronic and paper charts, and a computer
loaded with all the charts. Overkill? For sure but if we ever need any or all
of it, I'm sure we'll be glad we have it. We also carry travel insurance that
will pay for air evacuation from anywhere in the world to the hospital of our
choice. Don't necessarily feel that everyone needs all this equipment but it
is certainly something to consider. It's kind of like the stock market-depends
on your tolerance for risk and I have very little!!
