Ken and list,

CB radios have a very short distance (about 2 to 3 or 4 miles) and  
are of little or no use other than to converse informally with other  
boats you are traveling with.

You are much better off purchasing a small hand held VHF and use it  
on low power for communicating with boats you are traveling with  
(pick a non popular frequency).  Hand held VHF's are also good to  
talk to lock masters and tow boats, etc. while leaving your big 25  
watt unit on Channel 16.
