GL: Great Kills harbor

A word of caution about Great kills harbor.

We stopped there last spring. Less than half of the mooring balls were
occupied. We contacted every marine facility in the basin only to be told
that we had to be a member of a yacht club in order to tie up to a mooring.
We had let our home membership expire. We were told we could anchor anywhere
and did so nervously in the rather dense mooring field. A second round of
calls were made to find a place to land the dinghy for an hour or so. All
again refused to allow that even the county public marina!. The Admiral was
getting cabin fever after a number of days aboard so I dinghyed in to the
boatyard/marina fuel dock and tried to negotiate renting a space to tie up
the dinghy for a few hours only to be told that due to homeland security
Great Kills was declared a high security area and no landings other than
slip rentel were allowed. I believe that ????

After venting on the owner he offered me a half price fee ($1 vice $2/foot)
to tie up our boat behind the busy fuel dock for the day/night.

Moral to the story= Don't go there if you are not a member of a yacht club
and be prepared for short brisk conversations ending in NO.

YMMV
